Insights into Christian Formation is Focus of Faculty Book
Rebeca Letterman, associate professor of spiritual formation at Northeastern Seminary, teamed up with Susan Muto, executive director and dean of the Epiphany Academy of Formative Spirituality to author Understanding Our Story, The Life’s Work and Legacy of Adrian van Kaam in the Field of Formative Spirituality. This book offers a concise introduction to a holistic and comprehensive explanation of Christian formation and its relationship to human spirituality. Readings by the authors will be featured at a public reception on Friday, April 28 from 6:00 to 6:30 p.m. at Mercy Spirituality Center, 65 Highland Avenue, Rochester, N.Y.
Culling from van Kaam’s original, transformative thinking Understanding Our Story takes the most seminal ideas and vocabulary on formation science, formation anthropology, and formation theology and makes it accessible to those who engage in or are sensitive to spiritual formation. Readers find examples of theoretical-practical research drawn from everyday life and Scripture, reflection questions associated with each chapter and an extensive glossary that establishes common language for understanding Christian formation. Letterman explains, “the book is a re-gestalting of spiritual formation, providing a framework to apply spiritual disciplines and addressing how we live out what we believe and what helps us flourish.”
